Just Jonathan: Scattered Community Thoughts

Jonathan Meyer.

As time continues to pass, my curiosity about Tama-Toledo continues to develop. Thoughts ranging from “How about this new roundabout?” to “I wonder what downtown looked like one hundred years ago?” keep filling my head and occupy my psyche. While a more random entry into the series, I feel it’s a necessary one.

Let’s talk about the roundabout! If you’ve read Michael’s story on the new Business 30 roundabout beginning construction next week in Toledo, I’m sure you have feelings. I’m going to be one of the odd few that actually appreciates the addition. When I’m driving around town in my little car the feeling of only yielding and not having to make a full stop is preferable to me. I do worry about the farm equipment that passes through that intersection, but I think the safety of general traffic and flow will improve with the change. With anything you win some and lose some, I’d love to see the project be a net positive for the community.

With the season change and weather improving dramatically over the last few weeks, I get really excited about the outdoor activities available around town. I bet the prairie by the elementary school that Denise Fletcher has put so much time and effort into will be full of life really soon. I’ve really enjoyed running past the prairie and seeing how it grows and changes over time.

The rec trail is another piece of what makes our towns unique. Quite honestly springtime is my favorite time of year to use the trail, a nice windblock and a great place for a hit of serotonin as the greenery blooms, I’d encourage you to go check it out!

Trojan athletics and activities are in full swing now. Track, soccer, golf, the musical, ESports, band, choir, the upcoming art show, banquets, prom, scholarship night, and so much more is happening soon. It’s always been my belief that our students do best when they feel the love and support of the community around them. I also believe that’s how we keep talented young people wanting to live in the area and staying in our state. Iowa nice is a great saying, but when it’s truly taken as a call to action, maybe we’d see more people stick around. I can’t wait to support our students in their many endeavors.

One upcoming event that does a great job mixing our students and community is the Lincoln Highway Bridge Festival. Don’t we all love a good parade? Can we all get behind some live music and delicious food? I’m getting a bit ahead of myself here, but every year I look forward to the LHB Festival and this year is no different. Celebrating who we are while creating new memories together, that’s what it’s all about!

A final thought goes to the first year businesses in and around town. No matter if you sell merchandise, coffee, sweets, automotive services, or anything else I haven’t thought about, your contribution to the community is important and I hope you are supported in your business venture.

Until my next random thought about town, I’m Just Jonathan.
