Just Jonathan: The Planner

Jonathan Meyer.

I have never been the organized apple in the bunch. I wouldn’t call myself disorganized but I certainly have room to improve in that aspect of my life. For many years I would mention to people that I needed a planner. I would even brush off a certain guidance secretary while I was in school, telling her that I knew I needed one but never acted on it.

Now that I have become quite busy in my professional life, and can’t possibly keep track of my extensive social life…haha…the section full of planners in Walmart became quite appealing.

Now this wasn’t an easy decision. Will the boxes be big enough? Do the weeks start on Monday or Sunday? Do I want the full size or more of a smaller, compact journal? In the end I picked out the most beautiful black, half sized planner. A huge step in my personal life, and a real investment into the professional aspect. I was very proud of myself.

During a ride to an event you can read about in this very edition, I felt interrogated when I dared to bring up this planner coming into my life. A certain sibling of a certain reporter caught wind of the planner and all bets were off. As my hero Ron Burgundy famously said, “It felt like being thrown into a gang!”

The ridicule was about the fact I bought a planner for June of all months. My defense was about the big transition out of college for the summer. Sure it’s easy to keep track of assignments on Canvas (Our college class and homework portal) yet that luxury isn’t available for my work at the paper.

I won’t pretend to remember all the criticism, I have opted to block most of that out. I know that a certain reporter who was with me when a certain reporter’s sibling tore apart my hopes and dreams, supports me and my planning endeavors, that support is all I need!

Until I mark this down in my planner, I’m Just Jonathan.
