Just Jonathan: Small town tribulations

Jonathan Meyer

It has been a tough week around town, there’s no doubt about that. I would like to start by extending my sincere condolences to the family of Sydney Culbertson. Though I did not know Sydney, I was involved in many activities she participated in, her involvement and commitment to her interests has my utmost respect. My heart goes out to her friends and family.

Usually, I would come and offer my satirical advice, talk about my passions, or share a story or lesson I’ve learned, in this silly weekly column. With the devastating circumstances I’d like to talk about the good things I have seen this week.

To start with, from the first announcement I saw such an overwhelming amount of love and community online. Current students, STC staff, community members, parents, alumni, and so many more people came together online and wherever else possible. Despite the heartbreaking situation I saw so much love, compassion, and care shown for a student taken from us too soon.

Currently I am a music education student at Wartburg College, my days are filled with music classes and rehearsals. Something that has driven me towards music education is the way it can bring people together. This week I’ve seen exactly that with the STC band. The outcry of love support from the entire band was so moving. Mike Carnahan has built a pretty special culture in and out of the classroom. He doesn’t just produce good musicians, he produces great people.

On Friday night I volunteered with the band and got to see that group in action, although shaken they delivered one heck of a show.

Being around for the candlelight vigil afterwards was moving to say the least. There is nothing more heartbreaking than kids mourning the loss of a fellow kid. It was a beautiful tribute.

Although this is a bit of a strange edition, I invite you to grieve in whatever way is best for you. My scattered words and thoughts may not speak for everyone, but I hope in the end we can all move forward holding the family, friends, and memory of Sydney close to us.
