Just Jonathan: Where’d all the time go?

Jonathan Meyer

On May 22, I got done with my first full year of college. I was happy, excited, and looking forward to a fruitful summer. Sitting here in mid to late July I’m realizing my time is drying up. I feel like I’ve done so much yet so little.

That’s a cliché I feel like anybody older than me will talk about. “It goes by quicker and quicker” or “it goes by faster than you think” are often phrases I’ll hear in passing. I knew they were true but always discounted them as hardly noticeable. The older and older I’ve gotten I’m realizing those people are right, time is fleeting.

Does anyone know why time speeds up as you get older? Maybe it’s because you’ve lived longer and each day is an increasingly small proportion to your overall lifespan. I’m going to be honest, I Googled it and that’s one of the answers I found. A cop out on my part, but who am I to argue with an explanation like that!

With time becoming shorter as we live longer I find it unequivocally important to do things that matter. Live every day like you don’t have another. Are the things you do day-to-day fun, important, and joy filled? If I were to rate my own life on the scale I would think 80% of the time I’m happy with the day I’ve had. If my last day on earth was spent seeing my friends, going to work (believe it or not I enjoy working), seeing my family, going on a run, playing my trumpet, and so many other little things that bring me joy, I would die content and happy with the day I had.

I’ll leave you with the song that inspired this all. “Where’d all the time go? It’s starting to fly.” Time may seem like it’s flying but if you live your life with passion and joy flying won’t seem too far off.
