Just Jonathan: A birthday boy’s critique

Jonathan Meyer.

This piece is not just a cheap way to get a few birthday shoutouts, although appreciated! I want to fully appreciate this milestone and bring back more focus and intention to my life.

So often I’ve noticed myself dwelling on the past or worrying about the future, not relishing the present. For a society so riddled with the enemy of progress, FOMO (fear of missing out), we sure condemn ourselves to living without joy in the moment. Distracted with cell phones, past failures, future challenges, and so much more, I have found these valuable once in a lifetime opportunities pass right by us without much thought.

This year I want to make a change. As I turn 19 and begin the last year of my teenage adventure, I want to make every moment special and worth my time. Now of course not everything can be interesting and compelling, however valuable and purpose can be found everywhere you look. There is nothing to miss out on if you focus on what’s in front of you.

One of the most influential people in my life recently slowed down phone use and reassessed what valuable communication looks like. I intend to follow her lead and live with more purpose and awareness going forward. Sometimes taking that first step is all you need to live a better life.

I challenge everyone to take a look inside and strive for more.
