Just Jonathan: Believe in yourself
Jonathan Meyer.
Never in a million years did I think I would be a year out of high school working as a local reporter. As a matter of fact, I backed out of the position when it first came before me in February. The newspaper was something I read, not something I played a part in making.
After the initial avoidance, I met with my partner in crime Mike, and we had the crazy idea to start contributing stories to the paper. I was nothing but nervous and nearly backed out a second time, I simply wasn’t open to the ideas of myself being a writer. As much as I wanted to follow in the footsteps of my hero Ron Burgundy and report the news, I had no belief in myself.
For so long, I didn’t understand what I was capable of. How could I have known? Throughout my years of schooling, never did I feel academically engaged or really have the desire to improve on what I would’ve considered a weaker skill. With a little patience and a lot of late nights, I’ve improved immensely. Writing has become second nature.
This amazing journey has brought so many joys to my life. Getting to share the stories of those in the community I love and owe so much to, makes this the best job in the world. From Drake Relays and state track, to meeting both Senators from Iowa, I have the coolest job in the world.
In conclusion, believe in yourself. Something you might decline could be the coolest experience of your life. As one of my hero’s friends says, “60 percent of the time, it works every time.” Please oh please believe in yourself!
