The Iowa Caucuses

For the past several months, our great state of Iowa has been all over the news. The official start of every Presidential race begins in Community Halls, School Auditoriums and other gathering places throughout the state. This is grassroots politics at its’ finest. The entire nation and all the news media is focused on us. Everyone should attend your caucus. The political ball starts rolling right here in Tama County, as well as the other 98 counties in Iowa. Whether or not our vote or opinion will make a difference come next November is not for us to say. However we, the citizens of the Hawkeye, Cyclone and Panther state will get at least one chance to make our cumulative voices heard.

Monday, February first is Caucus Night in Iowa. The good news is that you can register that night in either party and then make your voice and opinion heard. And if you’ve been even remotely noticing the political spin going on, you probably know that this is gonna be one crazy and wild Presidential election.

Now. Let’s be honest here. I AM NO POLITICAL JUNKIE. Not by any stretch of the imagination. I just think it’s pretty cool that all the Presidential “wanna-be” have been all over our great state. And not only them but also all the major (and minor) news media. Yup, every four years, Iowa comes to the zenith of conversation, promises and poll numbers. The downside is that we are the first state to be inundated with the political ads too. Promise after promise after promise.

So here’s the way I see it. I am a ONE ISSUE voter. Now before you take issue with that, it’s my right to be a one-issue voter. In fact one can be a no issue voter is so desired. That’s the beauty of America. One person, one vote. My vote counts as much any one of the candidates. And yours does too. Unless of course, you don’t vote. Then your vote is, well, useless! So the standard saying here is “if you don’t vote, please don’t complain afterwards. In other words, voting also gives me the right to complain!! Haruumph!

What’s my one issue? I was waiting for someone to ask. I vote strictly pro-life! This year, I am torn between three pro-life candidates; Ted Cruz, Mike Huckabee or Marco Rubio. Personally I believe that since we allowed legal abortion way back in 1973, our country as really been spiraling downhill. I’m sure other factors have contributed to this but as long as we are a country, “One Nation Under God,” we are held accountable for our national decisions.

History tells us that at the birth of this great nation, we weren’t so great. In fact at the beginning and for years afterwards, we had little or no chance of actual survival.

But because we were founded as “One Nation Under God,” we became the absolute greatest nation on the face of the earth in less than 200 years. My friends, only divine Providence could have done that. But now, perhaps our spiritual pendulum has or is swinging the other way.

Now may God bless America once again.

But you and I are absolutely needed this coming Monday evening to voice our opinion. Find out where your caucus is and participate in this grassroots political process. And if you need to know who to vote for, give me a call at 319-327-4640 or email me at jsheda@indytel.com.

Have a great week!
