Disability Rights Iowa lists election goals

Disability Rights Iowa- the federally-funded attorneys organization in Des Moines- announced in a press release on Monday, Jan. 4:

Disability Rights Iowa has three main goals this election season:

Encourage voter registration for all Iowans with a focus on Iowans with disabilities and/or mental illness;

Inclusion of the perspective of Iowans with disabilities and mental illness in the 2016 Presidential Election.

Increased awareness of issues and policies that affect Iowans with disabilities and/or mental illness.

Also:

Campus Voting Projects: Disability Rights Iowa (DRI) believes students and faculty at our Community Colleges know their campuses and communities best. DRI is looking for proposals for Campus Projects to increase voter registration among students with disabilities and/or mental illness and increase awareness of issues and polices that affect Iowans with disabilities and/or mental illness.

Readers might recall Disability Rights Iowa in the forefront in the closing of the Iowa Juvenile Home / State Training School for Girls in Toledo. DRI issued a press release which it said “We applaud” the action of Governor Branstad and Human Services Director Palmer when the shut down was announced.

The News-Herald and Toledo Chronicle plan to continue to pursue what provisions for the care and treatment of youth housed in Toledo are ongoing and to determine if Disability Rights Iowa is continuing to aggressively monitor the programs.

The report “Kenny” was the only one there to see former Maryland Governor Martin O’Malley at the Tama Civic Center on the night of Dec. 28 may have been accurate.

This reporter was there at the appointed arrival time of 7:45 p.m. and spoke to two O’Malley staffers.

However, there’s little mention in the reporting there were near-blizzard conditions at the time and O’Malley was making the trek to Tama from Waterloo.
