Toledo Farmers Market

Dawn Troutner

Market Report for July 31, 2015

It was warm, the crowd was abundant, the whistle blew, and the Toledo Farmers Market started. Kristi had plenty of bakeries and some zucchini. Cindy had the back of her truck full of tomatoes, onions, taters, green beans, cucumbers and sweet corn. Darold’s table was full of zucchini, cabbage, cucumbers, tomatoes, taters, okra, egg plant, peppers, and a pretty bouquet of glads. Rod brought his truck full of corn, corn and more corn. That would be sweet corn. Chuck and Ginger had beets, cucumbers, taters, leeks, zucchini, egg plant, tomatoes, spaghetti squash, popcorn, okra, beans, and summer squash, along with bakery and eggs. Dawn had jams, fresh and dried herbs, rhubarb, summer squash, zucchini, beets, spaghetti squash, cucumbers, tomatoes, taters, pond plants, houseplants, leeks, and sweet onions. Cheryl had oven mitts, body scrubbies, dish soap dresses, towel sets, microwave mitts, ceramics, tiki torches, and bottle lamps. Marie and Lois were at market with green beans, green peppers, tomatoes, cabbage, zucchini, and cucumbers. Welcome back. Jim was under his pine tree with his hand made leather goods. He in fact was working on some leather item on this Friday night. Karen had soy candles and taters, Kathy had plenty of delicious bakery, cookies, breads, kolaches, pastry, rolls, and cake balls. Will and Thea had their aromethea candles and melts along with soaps, lava lip gloss, tutu body wash and new this week was daisy soaps and slitter snake body wash. Tassie had cookies, bars, lemonade, flower bouquets, and her smile. That was the line up for the Toledo Farmers Market this last Friday in July.

Its time to get those fall crops in. Lettuce, broccoli, and carrots need to be planted in August to be able to harvest in October. Kale, lettuce, spinach, peas, beets, and carrots can be planted in September to harvest in October. My rule of thumb is to plant everything you want for the fall by the time the Iowa State Fair is over.

The Toledo Farmers Market is half way over. Be sure to come out on Friday nights from 5-7 pm to find your goodies, before it’s too late.

See you at market.
