Letter to the Editor:

We are registering our objection to the cartoon on the Tuesday, September 8, 2009 Chronicle Opinion page by William Warren by withdrawing our subscription. We understand the first amendment.

We also understand the purpose of an opinion page. In addition, we are aware that the purpose of political cartoons is to caricature issues and people in the news. We don’t accept, however, that images that caricature racial stereotypes are acceptable in a newspaper in the United States. If your target audience is the general population of the community, we hope you are wrong that this is the type of hate speech that the community calls journalism.

We will miss the sports writing by Charlie Townsley and the school newspaper, but we cannot support a publication that encourages racism by portraying a bi-racial president as a dark monkey threatening children.
