Lincoln Highway Bridge: Tama, Iowa

Allan Richards

What happened to the Lincoln Highway Bridge in Tama, Iowa.

Where East meets West.

Where the Original Lincoln Highway letters were designed into the bridge.

Yes. The Lincoln Highway Bridge is gone.

Everyone said the destruction would never happen.

Officials always said we will not remove the Lincoln Highway Bridge.

Yes, it is happening and it will happen.

The facts are like this:

1) Bigger trucks are being routed over the bridge (20 to 40 tons).

2) Federal dollars are being accepted to make the bridge a modern truck route.

3) Structural and width requirements are being imposed.

4) The City will not consider alternate truck route.

5) The City will not budget the dollars to fix the bridge.

6) Planning is being made to save the railing and move it.

I have set up a bench in the Park to watch the bridge come done, so join me if you want.

This is your future for the Lincoln Highway Bridge.

Whether these same officials, leaders, and citizens realize this, it was their conscious choice by neglect, failure to act, and yes a combination of decisions that resulted in the bulldozing of the bridge.

Outrageous. You should be outraged. Act now or another landmark will be gone for selfless reasons. It shall be done, stop the likely removal of the bridge by your elected officials.

If there is a Prayer on Sunday;

7) A weight embargo on the “LINCOLN HIGHWAY” BRIDGE.

Will this Memorial Highway in Honor of a fallen President be only history in photo, words and memory.
