Lloyd Thomas (Tom) Holven

Lloyd Thomas (Tom) Holven was welcomed into the world on November 19, 1931 to parents Morris Alexander and Mabel Elizabeth (Arness). He grew up in the Decorah, IA area.
At age 15 he enlisted in the United States Army. When it was discovered he was only 15 years old he was discharged. At age 16 his father signed permission papers for him to re-enlist.
He was a decorated veteran, having fought in three major battles during the Korean Conflict (War). He was a heavy machine gunner in the Chosin Reservoir. The life expectancy for a heavy machine gunner at that time was 30 seconds.
He was awarded 3 Purple Heart Medals and The Bronze Star with “V” for Valor for meritorious service in combat. In his lifetime he served in the United States Army, United States Air Force and the Iowa National Guard.
When he returned to the states he met his future wife, Phyllis Newman. After knowing each other for 5 days they decided to marry.
With thoughts of being a career serviceman, he re-enlisted to the United States Air Force. After several months he was ordered to return to Korea. After review of his experiences and service, United States Senator Hickenlooper petitioned that he receive an honorable discharge.
Tom worked as a machinist primarily, but was a master of many trades. He was a respected instructor in Machine Trades at Hawkeye Technical Institute (Community College.) He was a member of the Toledo Legion, The Fraternal Order of the Masons, and the Waterloo Elks Lodge.
Children born to the couple included Rebecca (Allan) Alexander, Russell (Barbara) Holven, Doug Holven and April Holven.
Grandchildren include Jennifer Kenyon, Elizabeth Robinson, Jon Kenyon, Danny (Sara) Holven, Adam (Amber) Holven, Heather (Joe) Myers, Nathan (Brooke) Holven, Chelsea Holven, Ryan Graveman, Alicia (Daniel) Yoder and Andrew Graveman.
There are numerous great and great-great grandchildren.
Tom and Phyllis recently celebrated their 73rd wedding anniversary in June of this year.
Tom died on Saturday, August 9, 2025. He was preceeded in death by his father Morris, mother Mabel, sister Elizabeth and son Doug Holven.

A celebration of life will be at The American Legion in Toledo from 1:00 – 4:00 on Sunday, September 14.
