Maurice Wabaunasee

TAMA-Maurice Wayne Wabaunasee, 66, of Tama, passed away Wednesday, February 7, 2024 at UnityPoint Hospice in Waterloo. A Traditional Wake will be held Thursday Evening, February 8, 2024 starting at 6 PM at Mareno Wabaunasee residence, 391 W. Quail Rd., Tama. Native American Services will be held Friday Evening, February 9, 2024 also at the Mareno Wabaunasee residence. Traditional Graveside Services will be held Saturday, February 10, 2024 at 2:00 PM at McIntosh Cemetery on the Meskwaki Settlement in rural Tama.

Maurice was born on March 9, 1957, in Iowa City, Iowa, the son of Mike Wayne Sr. and Rose (Mitchell) Wabaunasee.

He received his GED and then went to Kirkwood Community studying to be an Equine Veterinarian, as he loved horses. Maurice enjoyed laughing and joking with family and friends, mushroom hunting, fishing, going to the casino, watching football, Western Movies and NASCAR.

Survivors include his siblings, Mareno (Susie) Wabaunasee of Tama, Rossano (Jessi) Wabaunasee of Tama, Melissa (Willie McCall) Wabaunasee of Tama, Melita (Larry Jr.) Butler of Shawnee, OK, Melanie Wabaunasee of Tama and LaRisha (Joe Ware) Wabaunasee of Binger, OK; adopted brothers, Travis (Torii) Andrews of Newalla, OK and Reginald Ahboah Akeen of Anadarko, OK; several grandchildren, great-grandchildren, cousins, nieces and nephews.

Preceding him in death were his parents, Mike Wayne and Rose Wabaunasee Sr.; grandparents, “John” Wayne Wabaunasee, Annie Waseskuk Wabaunasee, Frank Mitchell and Mary Morgan Mitchell; siblings, Michael Wayne Wabaunasee Jr., John Wayne Wabaunasee, Matilda Wabaunasee and Mercedes Wabaunasee.

Kruse-Phillips Funeral Home, Tama-Toledo is assisting the family with the arrangements.
