Dawn Marland

TAMA-Dawn Valerie Renee Marland, 52, of Tama, passed away, Saturday, December 30, 2023 at her home under the care of Compassus Hospice. A Traditional Wake will be held Sunday evening, December 31, 2023 at the Fox Clan Ceremonial Building on the Meskwaki Settlement in rural Tama. Traditional Graveside Services will be held Monday, January 1, 2024 at 2:00 PM at the Meskwaki Cemetery on the Meskwaki Settlement in rural Tama with Michael Keahna as speaker.

Dawn was born on January 17, 1971, in Marshalltown, Iowa, the daughter of Donald Marland and Marguerite Youngbear.

She graduated from South Tama High School.

Dawn worked many years at the Meskwaki Bingo and Casino. She enjoyed beading, cooking, and traveling to Powwows. Her greatest joy was being with family and taking care of her grandkids. Dawn was proud to help the community when asked.

Survivors include her daughters, Sherrie (Carlos) Mendoza and DeLarcy (Uriah) Wanatee; son, Hector (Abrielle) Ramirez Jr.; sisters, LaDonna Marland and Margaret Shuckahosee; brother, Dewey Bass; adopted daughters, Shania (Leo) Bullshoe, Jaylen Padilla, and Athena Padilla; adopted sister, Shelley Kapayou; adopted brothers, Dion Youngbear and Marland (Shelia) Sanache; adopted mothers, Iris Roberts and Debbie Youngbear; maternal aunts, Hattie (Dean) Whitebreast, and Mary Shuckahosee; maternal uncles, Raymond (Daria) Slick Jr., and Charlie (Kathy) Shuckahosee; grandkids, Tiernan Wanatee, Abram Wanatee, Auria Wanatee, Terence Wanatee, and Adaiah Wanatee; and many cousins, nieces and nephews.

Preceding her in death were her parents; maternal grandparents, Isaac Shuckahosee Jr., Agnes Shuckahosee, and Dewey Youngbear; and paternal grandparent, Carrie Mack.
