Eugene Albert “Gene” Anderson, 89

Eugene Albert “Gene” Anderson, 89, of Toledo, passed away Thursday, September 21, 2023, at his home in Toledo under the care of his loving wife and Iowa River Hospice. A Graveside Service was held Tuesday, September 26, 2023, at 11:00 AM at Woodlawn Cemetery in Toledo. A Memorial Visitation will be held Monday, October 16, 2023, from 10-11 AM at Kruse-Phillips Funeral Home in Tama with a Memorial Service to follow at 11:00 AM at the funeral home with Rev. Jill Mack officiating.

Eugene was born on December 10, 1933, at home in Mills County, near Emerson, Iowa. His parents were Albert J. and Mary Ann E. (Smith) Anderson.

He attended school in Strahan, Iowa, graduating in 1951.

On June 6, 1954, he was united in marriage to Carolyn L. Stille in Emerson, Iowa.

Gene entered the U.S. Army on September 13, 1954, and was mustered out on September 13, 1956. He attended Iowa State University, graduating in May 1960. Gene worked for Ralston Purina for two years and then changed to Farm Management, which brought their move to Toledo in the summer of 1963. He was with Farm Management for four years then left to become an Agronomist and District Sales Manager for Moews, OÕGold, Asgrow and Fontanelle until 2004. Gene worked on maintenance for Super 8 until retiring in 2012.

Gene was a member of Christ United Methodist Church in Toledo. He was Mayor of Toledo for two terms and was a fireman and EMT for several years. Gene was very active in Jaycees, American Legion and Lions Club. He was a Master Mason for sixty plus years and a member of Eastern Star. Gene held several offices in each organization.

Survivors include by his wife of sixty-nine years, Carolyn, of Toledo; his daughter, Susan (Todd) Sawyer, of Toledo; his son, Steven (Kelly) Anderson, of AZ; three grandchildren: Erinn (Ryan) Collison, Nick (Amanda) Sawyer and Darcy (Josh) Gropper; seven great grandchildren: Jacob (Shelby Slaven), Mason and Adalynn Collison, Izzy and Jaxson Gropper, and Kane and Jasper Sawyer; two step-grandchildren, Skyler and Jacob Shumway; one sister, Joyce (Bernie) Patton, of Scottdale, AZ; two sisters-in-law, Gloria Anderson, of Johnston, and Janice Stille, of Wixom, MI; and several nieces and nephews.

Preceding him in death were his parents; two brothers, Wayne Anderson and Junior Anderson and one brother-in-law, George Stille.
