Connie Jo Smith, 69

Connie Jo Smith, 69, of Tama, passed away Tuesday, June 6, 2023, at the University of Iowa Hospital & Clinics in Iowa City. Funeral Services were held Monday, June 12, 2023, at 11:00 AM at Kruse-Phillips Funeral Home in Tama with Pastor Warren Riley officiating. Interment will follow at Oak Hill Cemetery in Tama. Visitation was held prior to the service on Monday, June 12, 2023, from 10-11 AM at the funeral home.

Connie was born on August 20, 1953, in Marshalltown, Iowa, the daughter of Robert and Betty (Kjormoe) Matheson.

She graduated from South Tama High School in 1971 and then attended Kirkwood Community College in Cedar Rapids.

On June 21, 1980, she was united in marriage to William Smith at the Little Brown Church in Nashua, Iowa. Connie worked at GTE, Iowa Telecom, then Windstream and was the Chelsea Postmaster for a period of time. Over the years, she enjoyed horseback riding, camping and sailing. Caring for her pets was an important part of her life.

Survivors include her husband, Bill, of Tama; two sons, Robert Smith, of Greenwood Village, CO, and Christopher Smith, of Tama; her mother, Betty Altmaier, of Toledo; and her niece, Amber Matheson; several cousins, aunts, uncles and other relatives.

She was preceded in death by her father, Robert (Donna) Matheson; brother, Doug Matheson and niece, Crystal Leyendecker.

A memorial fund will be established.
