Don was born November 28, 1940, in Marshalltown, Iowa, the son of Virgil James and Lottie Francis (Babor) Havran.

Don married Karen Joyce Eernisse at the Little Brown Church in the Vale, in Nashua, Iowa, on April 4, 1961. Don entered the United States Air Force on July 8, 1963, as a Refrigeration Specialist. During his enlistment, they lived in Texas, North Dakota, Illinois and Italy. After receiving his Honorable Discharge in 1968, they moved to a family farm north of Toledo where they stayed until 1991 and then moved into town. Don operated his own refrigeration and air conditioning business, worked in maintenance at the Iowa Veterans Home in Marshalltown, and then at the Iowa Juvenile Home in maintenance and security until retirement. Don was a longtime active member of the American Legion in Toledo.

Always a tinkerer, Don built motorbikes out of small engines as a child, and even built their home’s first air conditioner. It was said by multiple people around town that, even before his dementia set in, he’d forgotten more about refrigeration than most people would ever know.

Don is survived by his three children: Christopher Wayne (Jillian) Havran, of Waukee, Michelle Lyn (Jeff) Hilsabeck, of West Des Moines, and Craig Alan (Jessica) Havran, of Elkhorn, NE; five grandchildren: Connor Havran, Cason Hilsabeck, Alaina, Logan and Stella Havran; and his brother, Gary (Carol) Havran, of Andover, MN.

Preceding him in death were his parents, his wife of 60 years, Karen Havran; and one child, Douglas Lee.

A memorial fund will be established.
