Frank “Boots” Patterson

Frank “Boots” Patterson, 91, of Toledo, longtime resident of Gilman, Iowa, passed away on Thursday, July 28, 2022, at UnityPoint Health – Marshalltown.

Services for Frank were held on Sunday, July 31 at Christ United Methodist Church in Toledo with Pastor Jill Mack officiating. He was laid to rest at Prairie View Cemetery in Gilman with full military honors provided by the combined VFW / American Legion Honor Guard of the surrounding area. Frank Steven Patterson was born on September 29, 1930, in Marshalltown, Iowa to parents Glenn A. Patterson and Elizabeth (Ward) Patterson. He grew up in Gilman and graduated from Gilman High School in 1948.

After graduation, Frank served his country for four years with the United States Navy as an aviation machinist, Second Class, during the Korean War. He started farming after his honorable discharge in 1952.

On June 11, 1954, he married Frances Brindle at Alice Church of God in rural Conrad. He and his wife moved to his grandmother’s farm southwest of Gilman in 1955 and later purchased this farm which was declared a Family Century Farm in 1993. Frank was very conservation-minded and practiced good soil and weed control. He raised hogs and cattle and grew corn, soybeans and alfalfa. Their four children were raised on this farm, also. Frank and Frances continued to farm until Frank’s retirement. In 1980, they moved to the south side of Gilman, where they lived for 35 years before moving to Seeland Park in Grinnell in 2015. Then they moved again to Toledo in January 2022.

Frank was very involved in many organizations including: lifetime member of the Gilman United Methodist Church, member of the United Methodist Men, life member and very active in the Gilman American Legion, life member of the Marshalltown V.F.W. Post #839, very ac-

tive member in the Gilman Lion’s Club for over 40 years, member of Grinnell Eagle’s Club #2545 and member of Oakland Acres Golf Club. His interests and hobbies include gardening, golfing, playing cards, bowling and doing odd jobs around the farms. He enjoyed traveling and spending winters in Florida after his retirement.

Frank is survived by his wife of 68 years; two daughters: Nancy (Jim) Smith, of Toledo, and Becky (Tim) Burton, of Alden; two sons: Mark (Marsha) Patterson, of Gilman and Dale Patterson, of Toledo; grandchildren: Bradley Smith, Jared (Tania) Smith and James Joshua (Tyne) Smith, Christa (Jeremy) Nichols, Andrew (Tyler) Burton, Jacob (Kristen) Patterson, and Erin Patterson (Noah Keenan); great grandchildren: Alexis, Clayton, Braden, Tariq, Lane, Anna, Gavin, Zara, Alivia, Justus, Cristy, Mason, Amaya, Gracelyn, and Elijah; his sister-in-law, Eleanor (Richard) Stromberg and nieces, nephews and cousins.

He is preceded in death by his parents; two grand-daughters: Jenelle Burton and Kasey Ann Patterson and three brothers: Ward, Jerry and Gene Patterson.
