Kurt Sloan

Kurt D Sloan, 70, passed away Monday, June 13, 2022. Kurt was born April 9, 1952, to Dallas and Irene Plucar Sloan, of Toledo, Iowa, the oldest of their 5 children. Kurt grew up in the Tama-Toledo area, graduating from South Tama County in 1970. He was a talented athlete, receiving many special honors in football and baseball. He was an expert at the head-first slide! Kurt continued his love of sports as an adult, playing softball, golf, racquetball and many other sports.

Kurt married his high school sweetheart, Jean Pagel, in 1973 while both attended and graduated from the University of Iowa. Kurt made his management career in the Tire Manufacturing industry in Akron and Bryan, Ohio, before moving to Carlisle in 1978 where he joined Armstrong/Titan Tire management and retired from Bridgestone/Firestone in 2017.

Kurt and Jean had the joy of raising two children, Kylie and Joshua. Kurt was a fixture at their many sporting and school events in high school and college. He spent many hours on the ballfield playing catch, putting balls on tees, hitting countless grounders and pitching to Kylie and Josh, passing along his love of sports. He understood the subtleties of the game, able to answer questions and provide guidance for any sport situation. His dedication contributed hugely to their successes on the field. He has continued to enjoy that tradition with his 4 grandchildren. When he couldn’t attend games, he watched videos and live streams of every event he could. He was so proud of his kids and grandkids.

Kurt loved being outside in the sun, whether he was working on his lawn and extensive landscaping or taking long walks on the beaches of the Caribbean. The annual trip to Okoboji for 30+ years with family and friends was legendary. Kurt and Jean enjoyed traveling to many warm destinations, along with visiting their children as they relocated across the country related to Kylie’s veterinary career and Josh’s service as a Marine Corps Officer. Kurt was extremely proud of their career accomplishments.

Kurt enjoyed opening his home to family and friends. He welcomed everyone and was genuinely interested in their well-being. He was always ready for light-hearted competition, whether that was playing cards, board games or sports. His best times were spent with kids and grandkids at the firepit, attending their sports events, movies in the backyard, garage lounging or gathered around the kitchen island.

Kurt was a kind and gentle soul who was a friend to all who met him. He quietly strived to ensure all co-workers, friends and family were appreciated and respected. Many will cherish their time with Kurt and the unconditional acceptance he afforded them. He will be missed by so many.

Kurt is survived by his wife, Jean, of 48 years: children, Dr. Kylie Sloan (Mike Davis), of Carlisle, and Joshua (Elizabeth) Sloan, of Raymore, MO, grandchildren: Leah and Jaxon Sloan and Adelyn and Kinsie Davis; sister Diana (Steve) Jacobs, brothers Darin (Kelly) and Scott (Michelle) and sister-in-law Catherine Sloan, and many nieces and nephews.

He is preceded in death by his parents, brother Leigh and niece Brittany.
