Randy Dostal
Randy Lewis Dostal, 71, of Tama passed away on Sunday, Feb. 6, 2022 at University Park Nursing and Rehabilitation Center in Des Moines, under the care of Hospice of the Midwest. A graveside service with full military rites will be held on May 21 at 1 pm at St. Patrick’s Cemetery in Tama. A Celebration of Life will follow at the Tama American Legion.
Randy was born on January 9, 1951 in Marshalltown to Ludwig (Shorty) and Reva (Caster) Dostal. He grew up on his parents’ farm where he enjoyed milking cows. Randy graduated from South Tama County High School in 1969 and joined the United States Army where he served in Vietnam until 1973, earning numerous military honors. On September 4, 1971, he was united in marriage to Jocelyn Beenken; they later divorced. To this union were born three children, Lisa (Nick) Buhr, Sara and Zac Dostal.
Randy was employed at Ritchie’s Industries, Fisher Controls, and as a handyman. In 1993, Randy earned a degree in electronic repair at Hawkeye Tech, Waterloo. He made his home in Garwin, Grundy Center, Toledo, Wisconsin and Florida before moving to Tama.
Randy was a talented carpenter, pie baker, painter, and woodworker. He enjoyed hunting, fishing, making poppies in tribute to military veterans, watching old westerns, VCR tapes and DVDs. Randy’s passion for country life led him to raise chickens and turkeys on his farm in rural Toledo. During his final days, he received a blanket of Valor from Hospice of the Midwest.
Survivors include his children, Lisa (Nick) Buhr, Sara and Zachariah Dostal, his grandchildren, Brendan, Taylor, Trace, Genesis, Allison, Nathan, Shaylan, Dakota, and Declan, two great grandchildren, Rosie and Azaria; a sister, Becky (Bill) Faircloth, two brothers, Alan and Kim (Judy) many nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.
Randy was preceded in death by his parents, Ludwig and Reva, his niece, Annelorre Dostal, and son-in-law, Max Purk.
