Robert Weitzell

Robert Allen “Bob” Weitzell, 89, of Tama, passed away Friday, December 24, 2021 at Windsor Manor Assisted Living in Grinnell under the care of UnityPoint Hospice. Visitation will be held Wednesday, December 29, 2021 from 9-10:30 AM at Kruse-Phillips Funeral Home in Tama with a Memorial Service following at 10:30 AM. Interment will follow at the Sheridan Cemetery in rural Grinnell.

Robert was born on November 30, 1932, at home in Sheridan Township in Poweshiek County, Iowa, the son of Elmer Floyd and Clara Elizabeth (Mohrfeld) Weitzell.

He attended Kindergarten thru 8th grade at Sheridan #1 country school and graduated from Grinnell High School.

Robert served his country from 1953-1955 in the U.S. Army during the Korean War.

Bob farmed the family farm retiring in 2005. He was a longtime member of the Sheridan United Methodist Church and a sixty-three year member of the American Legion. He was on the Board of Directors Gateway COOP and ASCS. In his spare time, he enjoyed woodworking, collecting belt buckles and ceramic rosettes.

Survivors include several nieces and nephews, Dale (Andrea) Zhorne and their daughter, Paige, Richard (the late Marsha) Schmidt, Mary (Perry) Thompson, John (Virginia “Cricket”) Schmidt, Debbie (Dennis) Burkle, Denise (Dick) Benson, David Bell, and Darin (Monica) Bell; and great nieces and nephews.

Preceding him in death were his parents; sisters, Wilma Schmidt and Dorothy Bell; fiancé, Phyllis Bethards; and a nephew, Robert Schmidt.

Memorials may be directed to the Sheridan Methodist Church or the Tama American Legion.
