Reva Dostal

Reva Marie (Caster) Dostal, 97, of Toledo, passed away Wednesday, November 24, 2021 at her daughter’s home under the care of Iowa River Hospice. A Mass of Christian Burial will be held Tuesday, November 30, 2021 at 10:30 AM at St. Patrick Catholic Church in Tama with Father Michael McAndrew as celebrant. Interment will follow at St. Patrick’s Cemetery in Tama. Visitation will be held Monday, November 29, 2021, from 5-7 PM at Kruse-Phillips Funeral Home in Tama with a Vigil Service following at 7 PM. The Mass will be live streamed on Kruse-Phillips Funeral Home & Cremation Services Facebook page.

Reva was born on February 29, 1924, on a farm near Eldora, Iowa, the daughter of Everett Wayne and Orpha (Carter) Caster.

She grew up in the Eldora-Union area and graduated from Union High School in 1941 where she played in the band and played basketball. In 2019, Reva was recognized as one of the oldest Iowa Girls basketball players at the Iowa State Girls Basketball Tournament. Reva graduated from Ellsworth Community College in Iowa Falls in 1943.

After being a nanny in Union and then Des Moines for a couple of summers, Reva went to work at the telephone company in Toledo. There she became friends with Lillian Bartosh (who would become her future sister-in-law) and introduced Reva to her husband Ludwig. Reva married Ludwig James Dostal at St. Patrick Catholic Church in Tama on July 18, 1946. They farmed in the Garwin and Toledo area.

Reva worked many years in the Clerk of Court office ending as the Clerk of Court for Tama County retiring in 1987. Reva was a member of the St. Patrick Catholic Church for seventy-five years and was active in Rosary Society many years as the secretary, ACCW Secretary, coordinated funeral dinners, helped with church fundraisers and helped count weekly offerings. Reva also volunteered with Meals on Wheels and did sewing at a nursing home. Reva made many lap robes and quilts for nursing homes and juvenile home and each of her children, grandchildren and many of her great grandchildren.

Reva and Ludwig traveled throughout the United States and made several trips to Europe. They also enjoyed square dancing and playing cards with friends. Reva had a passion for decorating cakes, baking and reading. She attended “Country Jam” in Wisconsin with her sister Margaret for many years. Her grandchildren and great grandchildren loved her brownies and potato salad.

Reva lost her home in the 2020 Derecho and spent the last year living with her daughter and son-in-law.

Survivors include her four children, Alan of Lake Brownwood, TX, Randy of Tama, Becky (Bill) Faircloth of Toledo, and Kim (Judy) of Albion; eleven grandchildren; thirty-four great grandchildren; seven great-great grandchildren; one brother, Roy Caster of Union; one sister, Betty Posusta of Toledo; and several nieces and nephews.

Reva was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Ludwig of seventy years; granddaughter, Annelorre Dostal; siblings, Wendell Caster, James Caster, Ray Caster in infancy, Margaret Sanders and Wayne Caster.
