Kurt Steuhm

Kurt Douglas “Chug” Steuhm, 60, of Tama, passed away peacefully on Monday, October 18, 2021 at Premier Estates of Toledo under the care of Iowa River Hospice. A Visitation will be held Thursday, October 21, 2021 from 4-7 PM at Kruse-Phillips Funeral Home in Tama. A Celebration of Life will be held Friday, October 22, 2021 starting at 6:30 PM at the Tama American Legion in Tama. Interment will be held at a later date at Maple Grove Cemetery in rural Tama.

Kurt was born on July 27, 1961, in Grinnell, Iowa, the son of Ronald Carl “Butch” and Jean (Backen) Steuhm.

He graduated from South Tama County High School in 1979.

On September 21, 2013, he was united in marriage to Dawn Hartman in Tama, Iowa. Kurt farmed and worked road construction for Cessford. He was a welder at Donaldson’s in Grinnell and lastly worked at the sale barn in Tama for many years before retiring. Kurt was a member of St. John Lutheran Church in rural Tama and the Fraternal Order of Eagles. He was really good with animals and enjoyed raising livestock, especially sheep, cattle and goats. He was a big college wrestling fan, especially Iowa and Iowa State and also college football.

Survivors include his wife, Dawn of Tama; stepdaughter, Cassandra (Arturo) Avila of Toledo; stepson, Kyle Purk of Tama; grand-stepson, Michael Avila; special children in his life, Kaven, Roger Jr. and Amiya; siblings, Kevin (Sue) Steuhm of Idaho Falls, ID, Ronald “Boo” (Nikki) Steuhm Jr. of Tama, and Renee (Randy) Burnes of Marshalltown; brother-in-law, Martine (Samantha) Neave of Tama; aunts, Carleen Corum of Tama, and Karen Jo (Gary) Meyers of Marshalltown; uncle Richard “Butch” Backen of Tama; several nieces and nephews; and special friend, John “J.J.” Jacoby of Tama.

Preceding him in death were his parents; mother-in-law, Shirley Neave; uncles, Amos Corum and Robert (Cherry) “Bob” Steuhm; aunt, Faith Backen; and cousins, Robert “Boo Boo” Steuhm and Pam Kusserow.

Memorials may be directed to Iowa River Hospice.

The family would like to extend a special thank you to Premier Estates of Toledo, Iowa River Hospice, Iowa Home Care, and Tama Co. Public Health for the care given to Kurt.
