Valentin and Bobette Lerma

A celebration of life service for Valentin and Bobette Lerma of Toledo, will be held at 10:00 AM on Saturday, July 10, 2021, at the Tama Meskwaki Celebration Assembly of God Church in Tama. The service will begin live streaming at 10:15 AM on the Smith Funeral Home and Crematory Facebook page. A reception will follow the service. A private family interment will be held at Hazelwood Cemetery in Grinnell.

Visitation will begin at 2:00 pm on Friday, July 9th at the Smith Funeral Home, 1103 Broad Street in Grinnell, and their family will receive friends from 4:00 pm until 7:00 pm.

Memorials may be designated to the Tama Meskwaki Celebration Assembly of God Church, mailed in care of the Smith Funeral Home, PO Box 368, Grinnell, Iowa 50112. Memories and condolences may be shared with family online at www.smithfh.com.

Val was born to Felix and Luz (Gonzales) Lerma on March 26, 1950, in Ohio. He was close to his siblings and loved attending family reunions. On March 5, 1972, he was united in marriage to Bobette Hagedorn. Following their marriage, they lived in Toleda, IA, where they raised their two sons, Daniel Hagedorn and Scott Allen. He was employed at Manatts and retired in 2020.

Val’s greatest blessing was his family. He enjoyed watching his son and grandson’s drag race. He took his grandchildren to Dairy Queen and spent many hours at the park. He would take his grandsons on imaginary bear hunts and would explore the outdoors with them. He could be found in his workshop during his free time building wooden gifts for his family with his carpentry skills. Val was a steward of his church. He was a kind and caring man who served the Lord.

Valentin, “Val” Lerma, went to his heavenly home on Easter Sunday, April 4, 2021, in Winter Haven, Florida at the age of 71. He is survived by his; Son, Dan (Brenda) Hagedorn; his grandchildren; Bailey and Kylie Allen and Brittney (Fred) Hudson, Dennis (Jacque) Hagedorn, Clint (Katie) Hagedorn. Brandon (Dana) Mikel, Ashely Mikel, and Mariah Mikel; nine sisters, Reynalda, Anita (Manual) Zavala, Mary (Don) McMillian, Erlinda Wilson, Lupe (Don) Jacobson, Juanita (Ernesto) Villeda, Lenora Stacy and Isabel Ross; four brothers, Alfredo Lerma, Joseph Lerma, and Julian (Jessica) Lerma; five great grandchildren, Elijah and Isaac Hagedorn, Jeremy Allen, Harper Hudson, and Jack Hagedorn; and many nieces, nephews, cousins and friends. Val was greeted in heaven by his parents, Felix and Luz; two brothers, John and Felix, Jr., son, Scott Allen, and daughter-in-law, Georgia Hagedorn.

Bobbi was born to Robert and Margaret (Adams) Warnell on April 8, 1944, in State Center, IA. On March 5, 1972, she was united in marriage to Valentin Lerma. Following their marriage she lived in Toledo, IA, where she worked at various jobs and raised their two sons, Daniel Hagedorn and Scott Allen.

Bobbi had an unwavering faith in God. She was an excellent cook and enjoyed preparing meals for her friends and family. She loved spending time teaching her grandchildren how to cook and bake. She would create Halloween and Christmas Villages that she added to with her grandchildren for many years. She was happiest when surrounded by her family. She enjoyed watching her son and grandson’s drag race, and she enjoyed shopping.

Bobette (Bobbi) Warnell Lerma, entered Heaven’s gate on June 5, 2021, in Winter Haven, Florida at the age of 77. She is survived by her son, Dan (Brenda) Hagedorn, her grandchildren; Bailey and Kylie Allen and Brittney (Fred) Hudson, Dennis (Jacque) Hagedorn, Clint (Katie) Hagedorn, Brandon (Dana)Mikel, Ashely Mikel, and Mariah Mikel, her 5 great-grandchildren; Elijah and Isaac Hagedorn, Jeremy Allen, Harper Hudson, and Jack Hagedorn. She is also survived by her sister, Kayleen Kelly, and several nieces, nephews, cousins, and many friends. Bobbi was greeted in heaven by her husband, Val, her son, Scott Allen, daughter- in- law Georgia Hagedorn, and her parents, Robert and Margaret.
