TAMA- Sylvia Lorene Kapayou, 85, of Tama, passed away, Wednesday, April 21, 2021 at her home surrounded by family on the Meskwaki Settlement in rural Tama under the care of UnityPoint Hospice-Grinnell. A Traditional Wake will be held Friday evening at the Fox Clan Ceremonial Building on the Meskwaki Settlement in rural Tama. Traditional Graveside Services will be held Saturday, April 24, 2021 at 2:00 PM at the Morgan Cemetery on the Settlement with Mike Keahna as speaker.

Sylvia was born on March 24, 1936, in Toledo, Iowa, the daughter of Gailey and Clara (YoungBear) Morgan.

She was married to Edward Kapayou Sr. until his death in 2000. Sylvia devoted her life to raising her family. She enjoyed doing word seeks and word finds, cruising, listening to a variety of music, shopping, and star gazing. Sylvia liked watching movies and TV, usually in the company of her youngest daughter, Erica and grandchildren, Ladarias and Shaolyn Kapayou-Simon. In Sylvia’s later years, Erica was dedicated to her mother’s comfort and happiness.

Survivors include her sons, Darwin Morgan, Kevin Sr. (Gail), Edward Jr. (Vangie), Evan (Natasha), Eric (Nicole); daughters, Andrea Jarvis, Gailyn (John), Gayle (Aaron) Walker, Jana (Sean) Kapayou-Bear, Erica (Larry); thirty-seven grandkids; forty-seven great-grandkids; several nieces and nephews; adopted children; brother, Gene Morgan; sisters, Marlene Morgan and Loretta Begay; adopted brothers, Garry Davenport, Adrian Pushetonequa, Gregory Keahna, Jack Aguilar, and Luke Kapayou.

Preceding her in death were her parents; husband, Edward; son, Anthony; grandsons, Anthony Kapayou and Reginald Walker; and four brothers, Gary, Gerald, Gailey Jr., and Gaylen.

Kruse-Phillips Funeral Home, Tama-Toledo is assisting the family with the arrangements.
