Charles Skarda

Charles “Chuck” William Skarda Sr., a man many remember for his quick smile, helping hand, and love of nature and of his family; passed away quietly in his sleep on Sunday February 28, 2021, at the age 88 at Pella Regional Health Center.

Chuck born in 1932 to Louis and Josephine (Hanousek) Skarda. He was the youngest of three. He is preceded in death by his sister Mary Lou Hala and is survived by his sister Ann Niedermann of Marshalltown, Iowa. He grew up on the family farm in Chelsea, Salt Creek, Tama County, Iowa.

At age 17, he joined the United States Army and made the military his career. He fought in both the Korean and Vietnam Wars. He was a decorated soldier and retired from the military as E7 Sergeant First Class.

In 1954 he married Bonnie J. Atchinson; the daughter of Arthur and Eva Mae Atchinson. They were married for 43 years and were the parents of Margo Lee Johnson (Russ) of Corona, California, and Charles William Skarda Jr. (Deana), of Pella, Iowa.

After the death of his wife Bonnie he was a companion of 20 years to LeNora Wacha with whom he enjoyed traveling and companionship.

Aside from his sister and children he is survived by grandchildren Thomas Barrentine (Mary), of Starkville, Mississippi, Robert Barrentine (Tina) of Tuson, Arizona, Max Castillo of Corona, California, Cassandra Van Wyk (Ben), Andrew Skarda and Jacob Skarda all of Pella, Iowa. He is also survived by nine great grandchildren and two great-great grandchildren.

Services may be held at a later date. The Garden Chapel Funeral Home in Pella is in charge of arrangements.
