Shirley Irene Polka

Shirley Irene Polka, 88, of Marshalltown, passed away Friday, January 15, 2021 at the Iowa River Hospice Home in Marshalltown. A Mass of Christian Burial will be held Tuesday, January 19, 2021 at 11:00 AM at St. Francis of Assisi Parish-St. Mary’s Church in Marshalltown with Father Alan Dietzenbach and Father Bernie Grady as concelebrants. Interment will follow at St. Patrick’s Cemetery in Tama. Visitation will be held Monday, January 18, 2021 from 2-5 PM at Kruse-Phillips Funeral Home in Tama. Masks and social distancing are required.

Shirley was born on January 16, 1932 in Tama, Iowa, the daughter of Roy and Lulu (Mohrfeld) Smith.

She attended Tama Schools.

On December 2, 1950, she was united in marriage to Donald Polka at St. Patrick Catholic Church in Tama.

Shirley was a member of St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Marshalltown. She enjoyed playing games on her tablet and playing cards.

Survivors include her husband of seventy years, Donald of Marshalltown; one daughter, Carla (Sean) McNulty of South Carolina; one son, Donald C. Polka of Jacksonville, FL; five grandchildren; four great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews; and her beloved cat, Jefferson.

Preceding her in death were her parents; an infant son, Robert E. Polka in 1955; one brother, Charles “Bud” Smith; and one sister, Jean Griswold.
