Tom Dillman

Tom Dillman, age 64 of Grinnell, died on Friday, December 18, 2020 at his home with his family by his side and under the care of UnityPoint Grinnell Regional Hospice.

A funeral service will be held at 10:30 am on Wednesday, December 23, 2020 at the Grinnell Christian Church with Pastor Scott Surovec officiating. A face mask will be required for those attending the service. A reception will follow the service in the Family Life Center (gymnasium) at the church. Private family interment will be held at Chester Cemetery north of Grinnell.

Visitation will begin at 1:00 pm on Tuesday, December 22nd at the Smith Funeral Home in Grinnell and his family will receive friends from 4:00 pm until 7:00 pm. A face mask will be required for those attending the visitation.

Memorials may be designated to the Tom Dillman Memorial Fund to benefit local organizations designated by his family and mailed in care of the Smith Funeral Home, PO Box 368, Grinnell, Iowa 50112.

Thomas Glen Dillman was born the son of Glen William Dillman and Rosella Joan (Scobee) Dillman on December 14, 1956 in Marshalltown, Iowa. He was raised on the family farm near Gilman and graduated from SEMCO High School in 1975.

Tom was united in marriage to Dawn Renee Paul on June 18, 1977 at the Laurel United Methodist Church in Laurel, Iowa. Their marriage was blessed with three children: Amy, Matt and Amber. He farmed north of Grinnell and was a Pioneer seed representative for over 25 years. He was an active member of the Grinnell Christian Church, where he served as an elder for many years and had taught Sunday school. He served on the Grinnell-Newburg School board for 8 years and had served on a local cooperative board in Gilman.

Tom held a strong love of his family and cherished the time they spent together, especially with his grandchildren. He enjoyed the many aspects of farming and was mechanically gifted. He held a patent for an acre counter used on agricultural planters and founded Tru-Count in 1982. His enjoyments were flying his airplane, spending time at their lake home in Lake of the Ozarks, and traveling. Tom will be remembered for his adventurous nature, quick wit, and his unique problem solving skills.

Tom is survived by his wife of 43 years, Dawn Dillman of Grinnell; his children, Amy (Joe) Price of Urbandale, Iowa, Matt (Rebecca) Dillman of Grinnell, and Amber (Adam) Wolthuizen of Sioux Falls, South Dakota; his grandchildren, Hunter, Bailey, Norah, Boden, Caden, Jacob, Luke, Avery, Aubrey, and Jameson; his mother, Rosella Dillman of Grinnell; his siblings, Nancy (Roger Ingram) Dillman of Grinnell, Jeff (Sue) Dillman of Ames, Iowa, and Lori (Doug) Edge of Newton, Iowa; and several nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his father, Glen Dillman in 2011; and his brothers, William (in infancy) in 1959, and David in 2005.
