Hollis was drafted into the United States Army during the Korean conflict from 1954-1956. Following his honorable discharge from the Army, he began his work in the concrete business. He was a genius when it came to working with concrete, he poured many basements, patios, sidewalks and driveways in the Marshalltown area. He worked closely with his brother Erv He eventually owned and operated a couple of his own concrete businesses in Marshalltown for over 30 years until his retirement.

He was united in marriage to his wife, Marilyn Perkins prior to his service in the Army. Through this union, he was blessed with three children. The two later separated. Years later, he was united in marriage to his second wife, Carolyn, Mozon and they were blessed with two children together. He was once again united in marriage to Beverly Butler and through this union he gained a son Jeff Butler which he raised as a kid of his own. Following their separation, Hollis met his life partner Lillian Dean and the two celebrated a wonderful 33 years together.

Hollis was a very hard worker and always had to be doing something. He loved his happy hour with his friends where he would play pool and down his afternoon cocktails. He often would be known as one who could cuss like a sailor. He followed his favorite football team which were the Kansas City Cheifs. He was a member of the State Center American Legion Post #122.
