Joann Shirley Toalson

TAMA-Joann Shirley Toalson, 81, of Tama, passed away Saturday, July 11, 2020 at Montezuma Specialty Care under the care of Pella Comfort House Hospice. Funeral Services will be held Thursday, July 16, 2020 at 1:00 PM at Kruse-Phillips Funeral Home in Tama with Deacon Stan Upah officiating. It is still proper to wear masks and maintain social distancing. For those not comfortable or unable to attend, the service will be live streamed on Kruse-Phillips Funeral Home and Cremation Services Facebook page. Interment will follow at National Cemetery in rural Vining. Visitation will be held Thursday, July 16, 2020 from 12 noon-1 PM at Kruse-Phillips Funeral Home.

Joann was born on February 12, 1939, in rural Elberon, Iowa, the daughter of Frank and Bessie (Banes) Dvorak. She graduated from Keystone High School.

On December 8, 1978, she was united in marriage to Donald Toalson in Tempe, AZ. Joann cleaned at the Tama Pack and most recently at the Juvenile Home in Toledo. She also did contract work for GTE. Joann was a member of Living Faith United Methodist Church in Tama and the Fraternal Order of Eagles Auxiliary. She loved fishing, gardening, traveling, and her pets.

Survivors include two daughters, Juli (Dave Bral) Stanford of Montezuma and Rhonda Schenk of Tama one grandson, Adam (Cheri) Foreman of Newton; two great-granddaughters Shawna and Leslie Foreman; two brothers, Bill (Janice) Dvorak of Elberon and Don (Jocille) Dvorak of Cedar Rapids; one sister, Louise Dvorak of Montezuma; and many nieces and nephews.

Preceding her in death were her parents; her husband Donald; and son-in-law, Jerry Schenk.
