Vitus John Kucera (92) went to be with his Lord and Savior Monday, March 30, 2020 at Grandview Heights Healthcare in Marshalltown, IA.

Private family funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m. on Saturday, May 30th, at the Mitchell Family Funeral Home with Roberta Edgar, pastor of Great Commission Church officiating. He was born on May 3, 1927 to Philip and Agnes Kucera. He grew up with six siblings on the family farm in Tama County. After completing country school, he attended Toledo High School, graduating in 1946. He went on to attend Loras College before returning home to help with the family farm. On February 20, 1950, he married Hilda Wacha at Holy Trinity Catholic Church in rural Vining, IA. During their 34 years of marriage, they were blessed with 15 children. Vitus farmed for 34 years.

In 1985, Vitus moved to Marshalltown and was married to Carol Kail. They were together for 20 years until her passing in 2005. He worked for Burt Clover and Ron Fisher manufacturing furniture in Marshalltown as well as enjoying woodworking as a hobby and creating gifts for his family. Vitus was a member of Great Commission Church.

February 2016, Vitus suffered a stroke. Since that time, Grandview Heights Healthcare became his home. He enjoyed reading the Bible, spreading God’s Word, and visiting with his children and family, telling stories of his life.

Surviving are his children: Ronald, Richard (Marlene), Rev. David, Dennis (Gayle), Barbara Hulme, Michael (Karen), Martin (April), Betty Devine, Janice (Jack) Halupnick, Brian (Susan), Kevin (Pam), and Julie (Al) Nuzum, along with 48 grandchildren and 42 great-grandchildren. His siblings: Sister Rosemary, Joseph (Pat), and Philip (Darla), sisters-in-law Irene Dvorak, Mary Ann, as well as many cousins. Stepchildren: Bambi (Joe) Schmidt, Penny Kail, 10 step grandchildren and 3 step great-grandchildren. He is preceded in death by his parents, brother Vaclav, and sisters; Rose Kvidera, and Mary Ann, Herink, brother-in-laws; Ferdinand Kvidera, James Herink, son-in-law Donald Hulme as well as his infant children; Loren, Kathy, and Gerard and step daughter Gail Kail.
