Audrey Sorrell

Audrey Sorrell, 96, West Burlington, Iowa, and formerly of Traer, passed away on Sunday, June, 10, 2018, at Great River Hospice Home in Burlington. Services are at 11 a.m. Thursday, June 14, 2018, at Overton Funeral Home, Traer, with visitation beginning at 10 a.m. to the time of the service. Burial will be at Buckingham Cemetery.

Audrey Louise (Vorba) (Tudor) Sorrell was born on January 8, 1922, in at home in Traer, to her parents Joseph and Agnes (Nechanicky) Vorba. She was raised on a farm in Perry Township and went to the country school and graduated from Traer High School in 1939. After high school, Audrey went for a 6 week 4H course at Ames College and studied home economics. She married Charles Tudor on October 14, 1942. The couple welcomed 5 children. Charles and Audrey later divorced.

On November 13, 1971 Audrey married Gilbert Sorrell in Traer and the two worked tirelessly at The Traer Star Clipper. Audrey loved her work at the newspaper and had a variety of jobs including lineotype operator, computer, type setter, proof reader, an advertising and sales agent and going to the street to obtain information for the articles. Gilbert died in 1994 and Audrey then retired from the paper in January of 1995 after 38 years of dedication.

She was a member of the American Legion Auxiliary, the Bonadlea Chapter: Order of Eastern Star, and the Traer Country Club. Audrey sewed, canned, and was a great cook. She was a kind and loving mother who loved to fish, garden, feed the birds and play card games. Audrey also loved to cheer on the Hawkeyes and the Chicago Cubs.

She is preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Gilbert; one beloved son: C. Michael Tudor; 3 brothers: Les, Joe, and Robert Vorba; and 2 sisters: Lillian Vorba and Margaret Anderson. Audrey is survived by her four daughters: Roberta Hulme of Mesa, Arizona, Patricia Abernathy of Burlington, Mary Jean (Gary) Sieck of Toledo, and Nancy Cavaniss of Burlington; and many grandchildren and great grandchildren.
