Bernard J. "Bernie" Kalinay

Bernard J. “Bernie” Kalinay, 71, of Toledo, passed away Tuesday, March 6, 2018 at Sunny Hill Care Center in Tama under the care of Cedar Valley Hospice. A Mass of Christian Burial will be held Saturday, March 10, 2018 at 10:00 AM at St. Patrick Catholic Church in Tama with Father Michael Mescher as celebrant. Interment will follow at Holy Trinity Cemetery in rural Toledo. Visitation will be held Friday, March 9, 2018 from 4-7 PM at Kruse-Phillips Funeral Home in Tama with a Vigil Service at 7 PM.

Bernard was born on March 27, 1946, in Toledo, Iowa, the son of Charles and Blanche (Hlas) Kalinay.

He graduated from Tama High School in 1964.

Bernard served his country in the U.S. Army from 1965-1968, during the Vietnam War.

Bernie farmed from 1968 until 1992. He also worked at the Tama Livestock Auction for seventeen years, Chelsea Ag Center, and Poweshiek Rural Water Association for fifteen years. He was a member of Catholic Order of Foresters and the Toledo American Legion. Bernie enjoyed hunting deer and coyotes, fishing, playing cards, building anything from wood and taking care of his yard. His greatest joy was his children, John, Nick and Jolene.

Survivors include two sons, John (Michelle) Kalinay of Toledo and Nick (Megan) Kalinay of Clutier; and one daughter, Jolene Kalinay of Colorado; one grandson, Charles Kalinay; his siblings, Bernice Diggins of Marshalltown, Mary Ann Kalinay of Grand Island, NE, Betty (Gene) Vesely of Toledo, Rose (David) Hendrickson of Brooklyn and Marlene (Don) Paustian of Toledo; his sister-in-law, Carol Kalinay of Toledo; and several nieces and a nephew.

Preceding him in death were his parents; one sister, Joan Kalinay; one brother, Emil Kalinay; and one brother-in-law, Ed Diggins.

Memorials may be directed to Cedar Valley Hospice.
