Betty Lorraine Smith, 84, of Tama, died Sunday, Dec.14, 2014, at Premier Estates of Toledo under the care of Hospice Compassus. Memorial Services will be held on Wednesday, Dec. 17, at 11 a.m. at Kruse-Phillips Funeral Home in Tama with Pastor Fred Berry officiating. Private interment will be held at Woodlawn Cemetery in Toledo at a future date. A Memorial Visitation will be held Wednesday, Dec.17, from 10-11 a.m. at Kruse-Phillips Funeral Home in Tama.
Betty was born on Aug. 3, 1930, in Toledo, Iowa, the daughter of George Amalong and Anna Katherine (Steuhm) Eberhart. She graduated from Toledo High School. Betty worked as a waitress at King Tower Cafe, cashier at Von’s By-Lo, owned and operated the Toledo Recreation Center in the
1960’s, was a waitress and assistant manager at the Gaslight Club in Tama for 27 years, and was later a fulltime mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother and daycare grandma to many children in the community. She enjoyed crocheting, making crafts, and decorating for weddings and family dinners. Betty also liked to bake and was known for her banana bread and cinnamon rolls. In addition, she enjoyed shopping and going to garage sales. Betty never knew a stranger and was always willing to help other people under any circumstance. She will be remembered for being a very kind and generous woman. Betty was a member of the Fraternal Order of Eagles Auxiliary, VFW Auxiliary and the Toledo American Legion Auxiliary which is partly named after her cousin Stanley Friedrichs, 1st Tama County veteran kia 1942.
Survivors include two children, Vickie (Rob Boardman) Smith of Toledo and Michael (Dallis Sonksen) Smith of Boone; four grandchildren, Brent (Melea) Willson of Walker, Tim (Heather) Ceaser of Tama, Tammie (Adam) Mellies of Toledo, and Tina (Jared) Sharp of Boone; seventeen great grandchildren, Kylie, Brooke, Lauren, Morgan, Madison, Danny, Alisa, Bobby, T.J., Brett, Courtney, Keenan, Dylan, Ashlynn, Drew, Dane, and Jace; four great-great grandchildren, Kayden, Jake, Jordan, and Wyatt; a sister Elaine (John) Atchison of Post Falls, ID; a sister-in-law, Linda Eberhart of Montour, and several nieces and nephews.
Preceding her in death were her parents; an infant daughter, Linda Kaye Smith; a sister, Mabel Eberhart, and a brother, Norman Eberhart.
A memorial fund has been established.
