Elberon Auxiliary April, May minutes

ELBERON — The James R. Kalina Unit 226 American Legion Auxiliary of Elberon met June 18. Members enjoyed eating lunch at the Tama Sale Barn Cafe. The minutes of the April meeting were read by Secretary, Norma Riha. Treasurer, Pat Sauer gave the financial report.

Old business included a report on the April 15 Bingo at the Iowa Veterans Home, hosted by the Tama county auxiliary units. Lorraine Vileta, Sauer and Marce were present to assist residents. A storm made the players move into the lobby to finish playing the games. On May 6, President Vileta presented the scholarship to Weston Kaestner at the Benton Community Awards program.

May 25 was the program honoring Memorial Day at the National Cemetery near Vining. It was a nice day and had a good attendance. Don Drahos was an excellent speaker and Mike Nodland gave the opening and closing prayers. Lauren Vavroch read the poppy poem, “In Flanders Fields” and Kelsey Vavroch read “We shall Keep the Faith.” The Clutier American Legion performed the Honor Guard and Taps. A light lunch was served. Poppy cans were collected. The Unit appreciates those area businesses who support the poppy distribution.

New business included one pin fine and the group signing a Thinking of You card for Jamie Kaloupek.

June 23 will be the next Tama County joint legion and auxiliary meeting in Clutier. A 6 o’clock potluck meal will be followed with the disposal of American flags that no longer should be flown. If area residents have such flags get them to a legion or auxiliary member for proper disposal. There are some Post Offices that have tubs for collecting flags. The ceremony is open to the public that evening.

The July 9 meeting will begin with a meal at the Lincoln cafe in Belle Plaine at 11:30 a.m.

The door prize was won by Vileta.
