Driver injured in Tama County crash dies due to injuries

CHELSEA — On Sunday, May 10, 2026, at approximately 2:56 p.m., the Tama County Sheriff’s Office responded to a two vehicle crash at the intersection of Highway E66 and Highway V18 in Tama County. Based on the preliminary investigation, a personal pickup truck that was responding to an emergency fire call failed to yield the right of way to the vehicle traveling east bound on Highway E66 causing a collision.

Both drivers suffered serious injuries in the crash. The driver of the vehicle traveling eastbound on E66 has since passed away as a result of injuries sustained in the crash.

Because this has now become a fatality investigation, the Tama County Sheriff’s Office has been in contact with the Iowa State Patrol regarding any further investigation moving forward.

“Overall, this is a very sad and tragic situation for everyone involved,” Sheriff Casey Schmidt.

The name of the deceased driver has not yet been publicly released.
