Toledo bandstand renovations to wrap up soon

Jim Roan, project manager for the Toledo Bandstand renovations, gives opening remarks at the Nov. 1, 2025, dedication on the Tama County Courthouse Square. The finishing work on the project is scheduled to be wrapped up this spring.

With the addition of a roof, new lighting and sound system in place, improvements to the 1938 downtown Toledo Bandstand are about 90 percent complete according to project chairman Jim Roan. The total cost of the project is now $125,201, paid by 56 donors and boosted by the City of Toledo, Tama County, the Tama-Toledo Area Chamber of Commerce and local businesses.

Located on the east side of the Tama County Courthouse Square in downtown Toledo, the bandstand has provided a venue for community events, remembrances and entertainment through the years. It was built in 1938 by the City of Toledo.

Total donations received now stand at $144,335, of which the balance left will be donated to wrapping up the work, Roan said. Coming up this spring the seven original lamps which lit the bandstand will return.

They will be mounted on brick pillars set along the sidewalk on the north side of the bandstand. The brick used for the pillars will match the Courthouse brick as does the new bandstand base.

New trees including red oak, elm and red buds will be planted and the bandstand floor will be refinished to wrap up the project.

Plaques recognizing all of the donors and contractors will be included on the light pillars, Roan said. Roan expressed his thanks for the support on this community project.

The original estimate on the contract signed on Aug, 18, 2025, was $125,585.18 subject to any change orders.
