The last year for fireworks?
This week’s Toledo City Council meeting
July 4, 2026, will be the last year for fireworks set off by the City of Toledo. At Monday’s Toledo Council meeting, the council decided to take out the line item from the 2027 fiscal year. Unless citizens fundraise or a donation of money comes in, the city will not be putting on fireworks in 2027.
Mayor Brian Sokol previously shared his thoughts with the paper on the subject.
“City budgets are tough this year, especially with the proposals floating through the Iowa Legislature. We are looking at every line item to see where we can cut. The cost of fireworks has doubled over the past few years, with the current budget amount of $16,000,” he said.
Officer Eric Dickinson was approved to stay on at the Toledo Police Department in a part-time position at a wage of $27.95. The council was updated on the situation at the Tama-Toledo Aquatic Center, as the west retaining wall has partially fallen.
A public hearing for the City of Toledo’s FY27 proposed property tax levy rate was set for March 23. Changes to the Reinig rental fees were approved.
The public works department reported removing snow. Economic Development Director Katherine Ollendieck reported working on multiple projects.
Chief Dan Quigley with the Toledo Police Department reported receiving 106 calls for service between Feb. 9 and 22. Twenty of the calls for service were nuisance-related calls. Four arrests were made. Tobacco compliance checks were completed with only one establishment failing the check.
