Two injured after head-on gravel collision in rural Tama County

CONTRIBUTED PHOTO — Two drivers were injured after a head-on collision in rural Tama County on Monday.

On Monday at 4:12 p.m., Tama County Dispatch received a 911 call through an automated crash detection system on a driver’s cell phone in the 2400blk of M Ave. Deputies responded to what turned out to be a head-on collision on a rural gravel road near the crest of a hill.

Both vehicles were traveling in the middle of the road and could not see each other because of the hill. The crash caused serious injuries to both drivers, but they are expected to recover.

“We are thankful for the quick response and great work by the Traer Fire Department, Traer EMS, and Toledo EMS,” Tama County Sheriff Casey Schmidt wrote in a press release. “This accident is a reminder that gravel roads can be dangerous. Please slow down before the crest of a hill and stay out of the middle of the road even if the shoulders are soft. Blind spots on hills make it impossible to see oncoming traffic, and driving in the center greatly increases the risk of a collision.”
