A speedy STC school board meeting

Write-In candidate emerges, Middle School sale Public Hearing upcoming

The South Tama County School Board met Monday evening at the high school for a fast paced meeting before an activities banquet held immediately afterwards.

Superintendent John Cain updated the board on the results of the recent school election, congratulating incumbents Joe Hanus and Elizabeth Dolezal, who were re-elected.

Cain added that the district has received write-in votes for the District 4 seat, currently held by Beth Wiese, which had no candidates on the ballot. He said a representative has emerged from that write-in process and that he has been in contact with the individual to share information about board member training opportunities and onboarding materials.

“If this person accepts, it would give us a full five-member board again,” Cain said. He noted that the individual has been provided with Iowa School Board Association (IASB) resources and information about the upcoming board member training sessions available through the organization.

The aforementioned individual is Danya Keahna, who received 27 votes out of 85 write-ins. There were over 40 individuals written in for the position with, Luther Heller receiving six votes and Melissa Feisel receiving four votes, as the next most voted individuals.

Cain briefly mentioned the upcoming public hearing on the potential sale of the old middle school property and two other Toledo parcels, to Southfork Premier Properties. The hearing is scheduled for Nov. 24, at 5 p.m. at the Partnership Center with a vote to follow in the regularly scheduled meeting.

Elementary administration and staff gave a detailed presentation about the happenings of the school building. Topics ranged from the newly established Kindness Crew to LETRS implementation, and ELL services.

The board also approved the final pay applications related to the new middle school roadway project and approved the hire of district mechanic Taylor Devig.
