For anyone who has been down to the Tama Legion recently, you might have seen something spooky on the windows. That is the art of local artist Andrew Peters. With a can of snow and some talent, Andrew was able to transform these windows into something both beautiful and frightening.

Andrew is only 28 years old and has had a passion for art most of his life. “I took every art class South Tama offered, but most of what I’ve learned has been self-taught. Ever since I can remember, art has always been a part of my life. After high school, I continued practicing, trying new techniques, and developing my own style,” Andrew said.

Even though Andrew has been an artist for years, the technique he used for decorating the Legion’s windows was rather new to him. “For the Legion windows, I used spray snow and worked with negative space to shape the images and create shading with brushes. Working with the spray snow was challenging because most of the art lies within the shading and opacity. That’s all you are working with. Snow is very unforgiving, and it’s an interesting medium to experiment with. I’ve been painting since grade school, but I hadn’t tried spray paint until Kali Messerli, who runs the bar, suggested it. Once I gave it a shot, I realized how much freedom it gives — it’s quick, and perfect for larger pieces like windows,” Andrew explained.

The Legion isn’t the only local establishment working with Andrew, as he is currently sketching designs for a sign for the Tama Fire Department. Although the design and all the ideas aren’t finalized as of yet, Andrew stated, “I’m excited to create something that reflects their work and pride in the community.

Andrew hopes to offer his artistic abilities to everyone in the community. “I’d love to offer custom window art and decal designs for anyone interested — whether it’s a business, storefront, or seasonal display. If someone has an idea or a vision, I can help bring it to life,” Andrew stated about the services he wants to offer.

If you haven’t stopped by recently, then make sure to get down there soon to see Andrew’s masterpieces on the Legion windows. Today, it’s three beautiful, yet creepy paintings on the entrances and exits, but one day soon, his work will be everywhere.
