Cheese Balls and The Council

This week’s Tama City Council meeting

As Tama EMS Administrator Jimmy Hicklin sat back, munching from a bag of white cheddar cheese puffs and playing a game on his phone, the Tama City Council held its meeting. Ryan Goodenbour, the coordinator for Tama County Emergency Management, started off the meeting. Ryan spoke to the council about all his department does and is responsible for.

The council then approved economic development loans for three locations: 106, 108, and 209 West Fourth Street.

The council approved the third quarter EMS transfer of approximately $31,000.

The council set a public hearing for November 3, 2025, for the vacation of the alley located at 105 Hall.

The council approved moving forward with the company Miron for the library CMAR (Construction management at risk) project.

The council approved the Iowa DOT contract for the HSIP crossing light. This crossing light is a part of the sidewalks to school program, and fundraised money will cover the cost of the light.

The council approved purchasing a replacement 4-gas tester for the public works department.

The Fire Department’s 50/50 grant was approved.

A 28E agreement between the Tama Police Department and the Iowa Department of Revenue was approved. This is so the TPD can check for any underage selling of tobacco or alcohol products.

The Fire Department reported helping with the pancake supper and that they are getting stuff fixed.

The Public Works Department reported getting stuff fixed up, and everything else has been running well.

EMS reported that calls have remained about the same and that they have been writing some grants.

The library reported getting ready to participate in Jolly Lights and the holiday parade. They’ve updated policies and the state report has been sent in. Circulation numbers are up, and the after school program is up and running smoothly. Staff evaluations are also currently being conducted.

The Tama Police Department reported that between September 15 and October 20 they responded to 273 calls to service. Of these 273 calls, 105 were moving violations, 14 were suspicious persons or vehicles, and two were for fighting.
