The devil in the details

Salt Creek Wind 2’s development agreement and Satanic Temple’s return discussed at supervisors meeting

This week’s Tama County Supervisors meeting started hot and boiling, and the public comment time started out with criticism of the Salt Creek Wind 2 Development Agreement. Zoning Administrator Laura Wilson and Doug Dvorak of the Zoning Commission were two to speak up about the deal.

The discussion continued with the supervisors later in the meeting as they talked about possible amendments to the development agreement. Supervisor Heather Knebel had a list of ideas and thoughts for amendments, which were discussed, but ultimately no action was taken. The supervisors did add a second public forum meeting to the schedule, so that they could hear more from the public on the issue. The forum on the Salt Creek 2 Development Agreement was set for Sept. 11 at 6pm, at the State Bank of Toledo Community Room.

Dusty roads were also a big topic as the rain has recently stopped. Tama County Engineer Ben Daleske addressed these concerns and also gave his report saying that dust control was applied to the detour for E43 and for 290th Street east of C Ave. The county will be reimbursed for the dust control by Salt Creek for 290th Street.

They are also working on Ross Street and E43 on K Avenue this week. They are digging ditches in multiple places and will be pinning some concrete culverts on 130th Street, East of Highway 63. They also started working on O Avenue between 200th & 210th replacing a low water stream crossing.

The supervisors approved the funding agreement for the 300th Street bridge replacement. What is over the estimated cost the county will pay, then the City of Toledo will reimburse the county half.

The supervisors approved entering into a settlement agreement with Purdue Pharma for opioid litigation, and a temporary liquor license for Your Private Bartender.

The supervisors discussed the courthouse lawn policy and application. It was stated that it needed to be cleaned up and have things legally verified. The idea for a calendar system was also mentioned. They approved sending the policy to the Heartland Risk Pool attorneys to get their opinion on the issue.

An application to use the courthouse lawn submitted by The Satanic Temple of Iowa was discussed. Since the Temple is not expecting a large crowd, the supervisors approved them using the lawn without having to complete the trials of the set application.

The supervisors discussed how other members of the community use the lawn without first filling out an application, and that going forward, only events with a large number of expected people would have to fill out an application. Knebel, during the discussion, said of the Tama County courthouse lawn, “It’s a nice area to sit and read.”

Claims totaling $390,106.17 were approved.
