Elberon Auxiliary makes Memorial Day plans

ELBERON — The Elberon American Legion Auxiliary Unit 226 met May 8. The group gathered at the Lincoln Cafe in Belle Plaine for a noon lunch in honor of Mother’s Day. Following the meal, secretary, Norma Riha called roll and read the minutes of the April meeting. A financial report was given by treasurer, Pat Sauer. Both reports approved as read.

Old business included reviewing the results of the voting that was done by county high school students that attended the April 9 County Government Day. At the March 25 County Legion and Auxiliary meeting in Reinbeck it was discussed that maybe Auxiliary should consider going to one county meeting a year because of low attendance. On April 16, the Unit assisted with Tama County Bingo at the Iowa Veterans Home. On May 7, Lorraine Vileta presented Merit awards for the Elberon American Legion and the Auxiliary at the Benton Community Schools awards program. Elijah Kupka and Troy Kupka each received an award from the Elberon Legion and from the Elberon Auxiliary.

New business was handing out a volunteer hours paper for each member to keep track of the hours spent volunteering for veterans and their families. The ALA plans for the Memorial Day program at 11 a.m. on May 26 at the National Cemetery near Vining was reviewed. Elizabeth Ledvina from the Tama County Veterans Affairs will be the speaker. Poppy poems will be read by Lauren Vavroch and Lily Becker. Pastor Don Drahos will lead everyone in opening and closing prayers. The Clutier American Legion will perform honor guard, with Randy Nekola playing TAPS. A light lunch will follow. Hoping for a beautiful day.

Poppy cans were set out in Elberon and Vining businesses for Poppy distribution.

June 24 will be the next Tama County joint Legion and Auxiliary meeting in Tama. A 6 p.m. potluck will be followed with the disposal of American flags that no longer should be flown. If people have such flags get them to a legion or auxiliary member for proper disposal. The ceremony is open to the public that evening.

Pat Sauer won the door prize.
