New officer needed

This week’s Toledo City Council meeting

TOLEDO – The Toledo City Council meeting’s most discussed agenda item dealt with the resignation of one Toledo Police Officer and the advertising for another. Current Toledo Police Officer Nick Ryan is leaving the department to become a sheriff’s deputy in Hardin County. This will leave the TPD down one officer once again.

Members of the council discussed at length the different places to advertise the position and the reasons why more people haven’t been applying. Advertising in the newspaper was mentioned, but it was ultimately decided that those who do read the paper, only do so for the cartoon.

Salud Sanchez, who organizes the soccer league that plays in the park on Sundays, attended to discuss and get some explanation of vendor’s permits.

STC Rec received a Mansfield grant to replace the North Field scoreboard. The lights of the scoreboard have been fading for some time. The council approved to have it replaced.

It was approved for the circus to use Toledo Heights on Aug. 22.

The public works department reported that the faulty well has been pulled and worked on for an approximate $34,000. It will take another approximate $70,000 to fix the issue and install a submersible pump. The current faulty system is all original to the well from the 1960’s. A 15-horsepower pump that was used at the sewer plant went out. Street patching and mowing have been done.

Police Chief Dan Quigley reported that between June 24 and July 7, they responded to 147 calls for service, and effected five arrests. Officers were in contact with citizens about fireworks, although there were only nine documented calls to service regarding fireworks. The Durango is once again experiencing problems.

The city clerk is working on year-end documents, and the auditor is coming soon.
