The Hugh O’Brian Youth Leadership Foundation is dedicated to “inspiring and developing our global community of youth and volunteers to a life dedicated to leadership, service, and innovation.” STC Junior Brooks Baier experienced this mission statement firsthand, recently completing HOBY’s Iowa Leadership Seminar hosted at Drake University.

After being notified during first semester by School Counselor Dina Keahna, Baier was surprised about his selection by the STC Staff.

The Toledo-Tama Kiwanis covers expenses for Baier to attend, to which Brooks expressed immense gratitude.

Highlighting his stay, Baier enjoyed many speakers and group activities, which all enhanced his leadership acumen. A talk about anxiety peaked his interest and taught him about the emotion and how to tackle its challenges in a leadership position.

“I’m very grateful to the Kiwanis and teachers at STC for giving me the opportunity. This experience gave me motivation to make a change. I learned that a small group of people over a little time can make a huge change. I’m excited to bring back what I learned,” he said.

With fresh motivation, new experiences, and confidence Brooks Baier is ready to lead at STC.
