From liquor to raises

This week’s Toledo city council meeting

TOLEDO – This week’s Toledo council meeting started out by talking about liquor. After much discussion, it was decided that the dual event farmer’s market and Stop Light festival would have a fenced-in area, and after that, the liquor license was approved.

Next up was a public hearing for the FY25 budget. The few people in attendance that made up the public had no comment. A resolution was approved to certify the budget to the Tama County Auditor.

A tax abatement for Midwest Sleep was approved. Toledo City Attorney Mike Marquess was approved for a raise from $150 an hour to $200 an hour.

Toledo Police Officer Nick Ryan was approved for his STEP 1 increase, Ryan has been certified for one year.

The Public Works Department reported that two Wastewater employees went to Kansas for an all paid for class. Surveys have been done for both wastewater and the water departments with no big problems.

Cemetery mowing is getting done with an extra guy. The subdivision signs are done and will be put up. The department is looking to get a new tractor mower at an estimated cost of $65,000.

Police Chief Dan Quigley reported that between April 8 and April 21, they received 114 calls to service and affected 13 arrests, with 20 misdemeanors filed and four felony charges filed.

Six search warrants were also executed, and three nuisance abatements. The Durango is back out of the shop after a few problems were fixed as well as having the windshield replaced again after being damaged in yet another high speed pursuit.

The Toledo Police Department joined the Marshalltown Police Department, the Marshall County Sheriff’s Office, and the Belle Plaine Police Department investigating a three county wide string of storage shed burglaries. The investigation ended with $4,000 worth of stolen merchandise being recovered for the Toledo victim.
