The South Tama County Board of Education, along with Superintendent John Cain and Maintenance Director Steve McAdoo, toured the future site of the new middle school — the old Iowa Juvenile Home campus in Toledo — on Friday morning in a special session to address a potential concern with asbestos.

“Today’s meeting was to move forward with a decision related to some asbestos that was left behind on the original scope. So as a Board we took a look at the area and decided to move forward with the removal and stay on schedule. We will continue to work with Terracon and the city of Toledo to collaborate on the situation,” Cain reported.

McAdoo then provided the Board with a quick tour of a few areas that will require future decisions, such as adding to or maintaining an existing bathroom area associated with a locker room, some areas that may require drywall instead of plastering as the overall finish will be enhanced and making use of the space as a custodial closet.

“These are all rather small areas, but as long as the Board was in the building, we took a look at these areas,” Cain said.
