More problems, more lawyers

News and notes from Monday’s Board of Supervisors meeting

TOLEDO – The June 19 Tama County Supervisors meeting was filled with differing opinions. The Board of Supervisors approved, by majority, the hiring of attorneys Joseph Gamble and Kayla Sproul due to issues involving the Board of Health.

After an article in the paper, lawyer Carlton Salmons was alerted to payments the Board of Health would be making to two homeowners that received wrongful approvals of septic systems by former Tama County Sanitarian Todd Apfel. Salmons told the supervisors that he found the payments to be unlawful for multiple reasons and recommended fellow attorneys, Gamble and Sproul, as Salmons himself will be retiring. The supervisors decided also to meet with the Board of Health at their next meeting, June 26, at noon.

The supervisors retained lawyers Gummart and Galbri as well for the Zoning board as Salmons will be retiring.

The engineer’s new dust control policy was approved and signed. A pole that was damaged by a woodpecker is being replaced. Further work is being done on the Toledo Deer Creek bridge, with cement being poured. Shouldering trucks are also out.

The supervisors also approved the one day RAGBRAI ordinance. Law enforcement contracts were approved.

An abatement for a non-existent building on leased land was approved.

The use of the courthouse lawn July 17-21 for the Wieting Theater’s Summer Theater Camp for lunch was approved. Claims totaling $579,193.56.
