Pollinators: Tama County Women, Land & Legacy to host upcoming event

Join Tama County Women, Land & Legacy for its upcoming event, “Summer Buzz: Farmstead Pollinator Tour.” It will be held on Wednesday, June 28 at the Jan and Rob Wobeter farmstead, 2551 300th Street in rural Toledo, one mile south of Highway E-43 (Duponda blacktop) at the intersection of PP Avenue and 300th Street. The event will begin promptly at 6:00 p.m. Since this is an outdoor event, a raindate is scheduled for June 29 at the same time and location.

The Wobeter farmstead is well-known for its pollinator-friendly flower beds, and a field-scale Conservation Reserve Program (CRP) pollinator planting is adjacent.

Our evening features Raina Genaw, Tama County Conservation Board Naturalist. Her love of nature began in childhood, when she would take long walks in the country collecting fossils and picking wildflowers.

As she grew older, Raina’s interest in the natural world grew. During college, she spent two years working as a seasonal naturalist at the Mines of Spain and Bellevue State Park near her hometown of Maquoketa, Iowa and discovered her passion for environmental education. After graduating from Drake University, she taught preschool in Dubuque, Iowa, then ultimately returned to the field of environmental education this past May as the new Naturalist for Tama County Conservation Board.

This event is free and open to the general public, both women and men. An RSVP is preferred by noon on June 28 by phoning 641-484-2702, ext. 3 or by emailing melody.bro@ia.nacdnet.net. “Pasture-appropriate” footwear and clothing are recommended for uneven terrain. Bring a lawn chair and join in refreshments!

Tama County Women, Land & Legacy began in 2007, part of a statewide USDA outreach project. This is the local group’s 45th event. Over 400 individuals from in and around Tama County have attended at least one of the group’s events.

Women, Land & Legacy is currently active in 42 Iowa counties and brings together Iowans interested in agriculture, local food and natural resources to converse, listen and become empowered for involvement on their landscape and in their communities.
